Dear Members of the Commission,
As proud members of D.C.’s small business community and a coalition of more than 480 small businesses across the District, we know local businesses are crucial to our city and economy. We provide jobs, essential services and enrich our neighborhoods with a diverse array of shops and restaurants. Today we are asking for your support and that you stand with us by not recommending new taxes on businesses in the District.
Small businesses like ours are facing economic challenges that make it hard to keep our doors open so we can serve customers and our community. This is especially true for those located downtown. The once-vibrant area bustling with federal and private sector workers and tourists, grabbing coffee, lunch or dinner, and patronizing local businesses, is struggling as companies and employees adapt to hybrid, flexible or fully remote workplaces. Local lunch spots, retail stores, parking garages and real estate spaces sit empty putting the livelihoods of small business owners and employees at stake. Others have been forced to shut their doors for good. In addition, many businesses relied on loans to get by during the pandemic – and those loans are coming due.
A diverse business landscape is the heart and soul of the District. To survive and build back we cannot afford new taxes that make D.C. an outlier and push residents to other jurisdictions to purchase goods, services and entertainment.
We joined this Alliance because it keeps us updated on critical D.C. government resources and allows us to share our firsthand perspective with our local leaders and representatives. As you work to draft your recommendations to the Mayor and D.C. Council, we hope you keep small businesses like ours in mind. New or increased taxes on our establishments, employees or customers will be devastating. New taxes would force us to raise prices for our customers, many of whom can’t afford it. We urge you to continue to support us so that our businesses can keep their doors open, thrive and help sustain and grow the District’s economy.
